Android 2.2 Froyo comes to the Dell Streak and HTC Legend

The Android 2.2 Froyo updates that appeared on the HTC Evo in the US and the Samsung Galaxy S in the UK, updates for two slightly ‘forgotten’ devices have begun: The Dell Streak and HTC Legend.

The Streak was running the long-in-the-tooth Android 1.6 the Legend was shipped with the more recent Android 2.1 Eclair. Android 2.2 Froyo brings a lot of new features to the table, including the ability to use the device as a portable Wi-fi hotspot, and the ability to run Adobe Flash 10.1.

Vodafone UK has begun to push out updates to Legends locked to their network, and other networks will no doubt follow suit. It is surprising that the Froyo update reached the Vodafone-branded Legends before unbranded versions; the latter usually receives the updates first due to a lack of specific carrier requirements, which takes time for HTC to deal with.

The Streak’s updates will begin ‘over the next few weeks,’ with updates being pushed directly from Dell.

It’s also amusing that these updates come as the Google Nexus Two (or Nexus S) will be imminently released, most likely running Android 2.3 Gingerbread. The feeling of obsolescence will soon grace Streak and Legend owners once again, it seems.
